Sergio Chavarria
(State of Mexico, 1996),Is a graduate from the Visual Arts degree at Escuela Nacional de Pintura Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda”, 2020.
Sergio Chavarría’s artistic practice operates at the intersection of documentary approaches and contemporary art. His work explores how the document and its narrative potential merge with subjective and formal strategies to examine social, cultural, and economic conditions.
In recent years, he has traveled across Mexico as a co-driver on cargo trucks, documenting and researching this profession from within. Through photography, video, and installation, Chavarría investigates how labor, materiality, and movement shape identities and reveal the structures that organize everyday life.
His projects often emerge from highly specific contexts—truck drivers, fruit-market sign painters, religious practices linked to transport, or the visual culture of decorative truck stickers. He frequently incorporates materials and visual languages drawn directly from these environments, reconfiguring them while preserving their original character.
Although his research is extensive and methodical, Chavarría intentionally avoids solemnity. Humor, irony, and accessible aesthetic decisions allow him to maintain conceptual rigor without losing sensitivity, vitality, or openness in his work.
