ESO YA LO DIJO BOURDIEU HACE UN CHINGO.

(Bourdieu actually said that 50 years ago).
Installation, 2024*

Three-part installation created during my residency at Pivô arte pesquisa, São Paulo. Together, they form a kind of essay on determinism, particularly as I relate to it as a racialized person. The first piece marks the defining situation being analyzed; Prieto is the most derogatory term used to refer to non-white people in Mexico. “Prietos en aprietos” not only creates a comical rhyme, but also reiterates and emphasizes the oppressive situation. Since ‘prieto’ means ‘tight’ or ‘tightly bound,’ being a prieto en aprietos means being in trouble because of who you are, because you don't fit in, because you are squeezed by the norm. On the other hand, the central piece, which consists of two different views, highlights the phrase “Todo por no estudiar” (All not studying), which is commonly heard in precarious work contexts, contrasting it with the sentence “O estudiar arte con el cp incorrecto” (Or study art with the wrong zip code). This points to the reality of contemporary art, in which an important part of your professional development and success depends on your socioeconomic position. Finally, the third piece, “Those who have magic don't need tricks,” calls for the appreciation and revaluation of qualities that are decisive but not oppressive per se. The ability of each person to express themselves using their economic and cultural resources without the need to operate through something that does not represent them or is not even allowed to them.

* This set of pieces is part of the ongoing project “The devil is in the details,” which repurposes the plastic tarps that cover the bodies of cargo trucks as a medium for phrases in the public domain that are affixed in the form of patches. The reuse of these phrases, together with the reinterpretation of the aesthetic forms developed by truck drivers, invites reflection on what I consider to be a collective unconscious.
