PICO DE GALLO.

Documentary video of the same name, 3 chapters, flag of sackcloth and mounds of vegetables, variable measures, 2019.

PICO DE GALLO is a project which consists of a video installation of three pieces. For the video documentary homonymous to the exhibition, I used the moving image from the point of view of the witness to reveal the dynamics around the production, distribution and marketing of three products of the basic food basket (chili, onion and tomato), as well as its symbolic relationship with the “mexicanity” and the concept of national identity. The documentary, which was fragmented into three chapters (each one on a screen), was accompanied by two other pieces: a flag made of sackcloth, made to the specific size of the exhibition space and alluding to the colors of the flag, with which I tried to raise the possibility of our sign of identification being represented by a sector of the population that has a great economic and symbolic impact on our society but is usually forgotten. Finally, the exhibition had three mounds of vegetables, one of chili, one of onions and finally one of boxes of tomatoes. For this piece I used the budget granted by the institution divided in three equal parts to acquire what I could afford with that amount for each product.
